Gary Griffiths hopes to stay in top 10
Gary Griffiths, who started his training career in 2007, has been a model of consistency over the years. He finished 17th in the trainers’ standing in 2015 with 12 winners and improved that spot to ninth last season, also with 12 winners.
This season Griffiths has made a good start as he occupies eighth spot with four winners, but he is hoping to once again finish in the top bracket of the trainers’ standings.
“I was an owner at first and at the time my trainer Rudolph Hardial made me his assistant, so I was able to come over to the track more freely and be around the stable areas and from there I just did my thing and became a trainer. Thus far I haven’t had any regrets choosing to take this path.
“At the moment things are going fairly good and I am trying to see if I can still maintain a position in the top 10.
“It is always good as a trainer to finish in the top 10 at the end of the season. It gives you encouragement and confidence in what you are doing.
“At the moment I have five lovely two-year-olds that are coming along well, plus I have some nice three-year-olds and it is my hope that they will do well,” Griffiths told the Complete Racing Guide.
Griffiths said that with no really big race success under his belt, he is targeting this year’s 2,000 Guineas, a race in which he believes that his charge Silence has an outside shot of taking home the main prize.
“I really have not had a big win since I am training horses; I have just been picking up one and two winners from time to time. I have not won any of the big races, I just win the normal races like Overnight Allowance and Open Allowance.
“The best horse that I have trained is Shining Light. I bought him for $200,000 and he earned over $3 million.Shining Light has been my major success so far.
“However, this year I am thinking about the 2,000 Guineas. It is not far-fetched, but I like Silence, I really like Silence. It is going to be a very competitive race, but I believe he is going to do well,” Griffiths noted.
