ROCK, Trelawny President of the Trelawny Association of Lay Magistrates Kenneth Hugh Grant has harshly criticised many of the justices of the peace (JPs) in the parish, labeling them as “failures.”“They are failing, majority of them. Yes it is. Even getting justices to go and check the lock-ups, which we are supposed to do, sometimes it’s hard,” Grant said.He argued that the reluctance of those justices of the peace to perform is “putting a back-breaking burden” on the ones who are called time after time to fill the breach.“It is unfair to the rest of justices. Sometimes I am afraid to call on some justices because I call on them too much, and every time you call on another set (you hear) ‘oh they have this to do, and there to go, they are not available.’ If you cannot manage the job, give it up,” Grant declared.“It’s just a few, the same justices each time that are available.”Grant was speaking at the recent Trelawny Association of Lay Magistrates 20th Annual Prayer Breakfast at the Glistening Waters Restaurant in Rock, Trelawny.Custos of Trelawny Paul Muschett concurred with Grant and charged JPs to step up to the plate.“What he (Grant) said it is so true… as justices of the peace we are leaders in our communities and therefore we must take up the mantle and be vigilant with what is happening in our communities and speak up and help the police and assist them in every way that we can,” the Trelawny custos challenged.
