Whitmore axes Mattocks, Burke
SAN DIEGO, California — Senior Reggae Boyz head coach Theodore Whitmore has sent a clear and unequivocal message to his players.
Indiscipline will not be tolerated.
The former Reggae Boyz star player has axed strikers Darren Mattocks and Cory Burke from his starting line-up scheduled to face Curacao shortly in the opening Group C game here at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup inside the Qualcomm Stadium.
Having announced his starting line-up earlier this morning, Whitmore took the decision to withdraw the players after they failed to turn up on time for a scheduled 1:30 pm pre-game team meeting at the team’s Hilton Mission Valley hotel.
The day’s schedule had breakfast for 8-9:00 am; equipment departure for stadium at 11:30 am; lunch at midday; team meeting at 1:30 pm, with team’s departure for stadium at 2:00 pm; game at 4:00 pm; dinner at 8:00 pm, and staff meeting at 9:30 pm to close out the day.
As a result Whitmore has included Jermaine Johnson and Romario Williams as replacements.
The starting eleven is completed by goalkeeper and captain Andre Blake, Damion Lowe, Jermaine Taylor, Alvas Powell and Kemar Lawrence in defence; Je-Vaughn Watson, Kevon Lambert, Owayne Gordon and Oniel Fisher in midfield in a 4-4-2 formation.
Mexico and El Salvador will contest the second game at 6:00 pm (8:00 pm Jamaica time) in the group’s other match.
