WHAT THEY SAY: Trevor Dunkley Snr – Racehorse owner

When did start your career as an owner?

I was involved in the sport of horseracing a long time ago. As a young man growing up, I loved the game and the more I came to the Park, the more my love for the game of horseracing got stronger. This is something that I love and enjoy very much. At one point, I went away and said that I was packing up racing for good but my son – Trevor Dunkley Jnr – brought me back into the sport. However, my career as an owner started, I believe, if I remember correctly, in the 1980s and that is a long time ago and I am still going.

Which horse was your first winner?

My first winner was with a horse I owned by the name of Classical Rock. Winning my first race I felt really, really great. The feeling back then was wonderful and I don’t know how to explain it right now but I was a very happy man. I felt as if I was a king that day and by the way every time I win a race I feel really good. It is a wonderful feeling.

Which horse was your longest odds winner?

Well, this is a very tricky one. I really don’t remember because my horses don’t usually win at very long odds. They are always in the favourite’s section most of the times they race. It is always a joy to win races no matter the odds. Some of the times, I think that my horses would win and pay some money but they are always selling down the board but that is not important – the important thing is for them to win races. Every time they win, I am happy and I always want to be happy.

Which is the best horse you have owned?

I have had some rough times with my horses but I am getting there now. Classical Rock could have gone a long way but unfortunately, he broke his foot on the racetrack and that was it for him. I brought horses from the local Yearling Sales, a couple of times and there is where, I got Miss Lee. She had a bad foot and the trainer didn’t want me to buy her but I had already committed myself to buy and I just bought her and done. She came and won three races before I turned out to the breeding farm and I still have her there. Miss Lee has given me some lovely young ones. I will soon find one big horse, someday that is.

Which is the best horse you have seen raced at Caymanas Park?

There have been some really good horses that raced here at the Park. I was into a horse by the name of Persian Coin. He was a very good racehorse. Then came along Rameses, who was a very good one as well. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some very good horses at the Park but those two – Persian Coin and Rameses – I really did have a special liking for them both.

Who influenced your career the most?

I just love horses and the sport and this is why I don’t like when jockeys put too much whip on my horses because I just have a special liking for them. But since I am here, I have gotten support from all around, so let me just thank all who have offered me assistance. I thank them.
