#London2017: Two Jamaicans through to men’s 400m semis
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Two Jamaican’s will line up in tomorrow’s semi-finals of the men’s 400m race.
Nathon Allen of Jamaica won the final men’s 400m first round heat in 44.91, 0.01 ahead of US runner Gil Roberts. His teammate Demish Gaye (44.98 seconds) qualified in second behind Botswana’s Baboloki Thebe (44.82) in the third heat.
But, there was big noise for Britain’s Dwain Cowan, son of British coach Lloyd Cowan, who surfed home on the support to take the third automatic qualifying place in 45.39 in that race.
Meanwhile, World and Olympic 400m champion Wayde Van Niekerk was on the blocks for the second of the morning’s men’s 400m heats. He clocked 45.27 to win his heat despite a slow start.
Jamaica’s Steven Gayle, who ran in heat 4, finished down the pack in 7th with 46.33 seconds and was later disqualified from the event.
Steven Gardiner of The Bahamas won the heat early in an impressive 44.75 seconds. Behind him, the aptly named Wilbert London III of the United States, in 45.10, and Ireland’s Brian Gregan taking the third automatic place in the semi-finals in 45.37.
