U-17 Girlz thrash hosts SVG to advance
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent and the Grenadines — Jamaica’s Under-17 Women footballers made it two wins from two after defeating hosts St Vincent and the Grenadines 7-0 in the final preliminary round of matches of the CONCACAF Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Qualifiers here at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex yesterday.
Rochell Gray (eighth minute and 53rd minute), Jaden Roberts (21st minute), Sydoney Clarke (penalty 44th minute), Jody Brown (penalty 64th minute), Monique Perrier (72nd) and Davia Richards (88th minute) got the goals for Jamaica.
With both victories, Jamaica topped Group E with maximum six points from two games. St Kitts and Nevis finished second with three points, while the host nation finished last in the three-team table without a point.
Jamaica, along with the other four Group winners, advance to the final stage of qualification and join hosts Haiti for the final round to be held from October 16-22. In the final round, the six teams will be drawn into two groups of three.
Teams finishing first in the two groups shall automatically qualify for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Under 17 Championship. The runner-up teams of the groups shall play off in a single match to determine the third place team to qualify for the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Under- 17 Championship.
“It was a good performance…I think it was a better performance from the first game in terms of how we played. The girls played with a little bit more discipline; we were able to possess the ball more and take the game to them and that was what we did. I am very proud of the girls,” head coach Xavier Gilbert told the Jamaica Observer.
It took a little time for Jamaica to get into groove but once they did it was all smooth sailing for the young Reggae Girlz who dominated their opponents from start to finish in front of a half-packed stadium.
Clarke got the Jamaicans alive in the fifth minute when from an acute angle inside the 18-yard box her shot was put out for a corner by Samonique La Borde in goal for the hosts.
Three minutes later Nevilleagail Able with a beautiful through pass that found the swift Gray behind three defenders, who then easily shoot past La Borde to give Jamaica the lead.
The Jamaicans continued to pressure the host nation with some beautiful one-two passes, providing scoring opportunities which forced La Borde to pull off some good saves. In the ninth minutes La Borde at full stretch to her right denied Giselle Washington and a minute later Brown’s serving shot was blocked by La Borde.
The intention was cleared at the start of the second half when the Jamaican immediately attacked the St Vincent and the Grenadines goal. Gray skipped through their backline but only to find the crossbar once again in the 49th minute.
The final whistle saved the host nation from further destruction.
