THE new school term is just around the corner and parents will be rushing around, checking off that extensive shopping list that will no doubt include books, uniforms, sports kits, and, of course, new school shoes.

It is important that your child has a well-made pair that will reduce the risk of injury, and keep their feet dry and supported.

Parents need to make smart choices and not let fashion dictate what they purchase. They need to buy a shoe with good toe flexibility, a rigid middle, and a stiff heel.

The shoes should not require a period to be broken in but should be comfortable straight away.

The support around the ankle is essential for the foot to function properly, so a lace or strap will hold the shoe securely in place.

Avoid hand-me-down footwear. Just because a shoe fits one child comfortably, it doesn’t mean it will fit another in the same way.

Remember, your child’s foot would probably have grown over the summer holiday so ensure that they are wearing the correct size, which also goes for socks. Toes should be able to wriggle around freely and when observed, you should not see the impression of any bones or joints.

If possible, buy leather shoes. It is a much more robust material when dealing with daily school life and can work out to be a lot more cost-effective.

Always take your child with you when buying their shoes so they can to walk around the store in the shoe to ensure it is comfortable.

It is surprising how the smallest seam or stitching in a shoe can cause discomfort or trauma.
