Apprentice intake to get underway
The jockey’s training programme conducted by the Jamaica Racing Commission is inviting enrolment of suitably qualified individuals to begin training to become licensed jockeys.
The course is slated to start in February of next year and a maximum of 25 will be enrolled.
The criteria for enrolment is set out below:
1. Application for enrolment in the programme must be made by answering all questions on the prescribed application form.
2. Applicants, male and female, must be nominated by trainers on the prescribed nomination form obtainable at the Welfare Office, Caymanas Park, or the offices of the Jamaica Racing Commission, 8 Winchester Road, Kingston 10.
3. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Age – 16 – 25 years
Weight — not more than 50.0 kg
Riding Skill — must be able to canter a horse
Education — Grade 9
4. Applicants who supply the proper documentation will be required to take written and riding tests.
5. Applicants who are successful in the literacy and riding tests will be interviewed along with their parents. They will be required to have medical tests done by one of the prescribed medical practitioners and will be tested for drug use. Any applicant who fails to pass the first drug test will not be accepted in the programme.
6. Applicants who are accepted in the programme will be required to pay a tuition fee of $350,000; of which $175,000 must be paid on acceptance and the balance payable prior to the start of the second term.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Complete the application form.
2. Have your trainer complete the nomination form.
3. Return the forms to the welfare officer, Caymanas Park, with the following:
(a) Certified copy of birth certificate (first-time applicants only).
(b) School-leaving certificate, if available (first-time applicants only).
(c) Letter of reference from either a pastor, the principal of last school attended or a justice of the peace.
(d) One recent colour passport sized photograph.
All application must be submitted not later than September 30, 2017.
