It is with deep regret that we learn of the passing of Solomon Gardner, long-standing guardian of service at the iconic Sugar Mill Restaurant at Half Moon.

Stepping into the tourist industry at the curious age of 15, Solomon learnt and perfected the art of genteel service.

His quiet warmth and courteous manner welcomed thousands to his beloved Sugar Mill and endeared him to visitors from around the world.

To speak of Sugar Mill is to speak of Solomon, Mr G to some, and Sir G to others. So attuned was he to his guests that he anticipated just what they needed before the request even formed on their lips.

For his team, Solomon was an example. He trained them with meticulous attention to detail, encouraging his younger staff to see their potential, gently scolding when necessary, and holding each one to a higher standard.

For his managers, he was a trusted member of the team. For his guests, whom he made to feel a valuable member of his family, he was service personified.

With Solomon’s passing Half Moon has lost a beloved member of its family. Jamaica is bereft of another legend, a true guardian of service. And for me, personally, and many others who have come to know Sir G over the years, life seems to have lost a bit of its sparkle.

On behalf of the board of directors, management and staff of the Jamaica Tourist Board, our sincere condolence to his family and his extended Half Moon family. Rest well, dear friend; we will miss you.
