The Charlton Academy will honour several well-known local footballers and coaches at its Heroes’ Football Awards ceremony which is part of the one-day football tournament to be held today in 2 North, Greater Portmore, St Catherine.

Special recognition, however, will be given to late Leighton Duncan who was coach of Jamaica’s national team and Cavalier Football Club.

The Charlton Academy Awards recognise people in the categories of leadership, organisation, religion, development, and sports (The Lord’s Awards).

The Lifetime Achievement main award will be presented to Fae Ellington, an award-winning actress and lecturer.

Former national football captain and an outstanding schoolboy coach Frank “Preckay” Brown heads the list of nine people for lifetime achievement awards. Brown, who played left back for the now-defunct Railway Football Club, captained Jamaica in 1967.

Danville “Dan” Clarke, a former Railway player, and Paul “Cool Foot” Thomas, the ex-Liguanea United right back, are also on the list.

Former national player Derrick “Shastri” Denniser will also be awarded for his exploits at the midfield position for Jamaica, Boys’ Town and Kingston College.

Outstanding coaches Patrick “Jackie” Walters, Lebert Halliman and Emerson “Diggie” Henry will also be recognised.

Charlton Academy, the brainchild of Shawn Charlton, opened in July 2014.

The football tournament starts at 9:00 am. The champion team will receive $15,000, while second place will take home $10,000.
