Class Dismissed

Champs Arnett pound UWI 4-1

Arnett Gardens inflicted the first loss of the season on UWI when they beat them 4-1 at the UWI Bowl on Sunday in their Red Stripe Premier League fixture.

Arnett entered the game on third place, two points behind the second-placed UWI.

After an even start to the game, Rickardo Oldham put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute when he was on hand to head home at the back post from a Marvin Morgan cross.

Lennox Russell was in good position to double the advantage for the visitors, but lost his balance on the shot 16 yards from goal.

UWI’s Girvon Brown tested Damian Hyatt with a low shot to his left but the national representative was alert to the danger, saving well before Oniel Thompson cleared the danger.

Russell got another glimpse at goal but he skied his shot on the half-volley, then Fabian Reid was denied a certain goal by a block from Taniel McKenzie six yards from goal.

Morgan was on the rebound in a flash, but his effort was tipped over for a corner kick by goalkeeper Nickolas King.

UWI man of the moment Ryan Miller then restored parity with a brilliantly taken goal. The midfielder rolled the ball with the bottom of his foot into his own path before sliding it pass Hyatt to make 1-1 in the 33rd minute.

Morgan came close to getting his name on the score- sheet before the break, but his shot on target was straight at King.

An early goal in the second half was just what the doctor ordered for the Jerome Waite-coached team when the prolific Reid blasted home the rebound after King saved a shot at his near post from Oniel Anderson.

Both teams tried to cope with the heavy underfoot conditions that were made worse by a downpour during the half-time break.

The fans had to wait until stoppage time for another goal and it came from the boot of Arnett substitute Renae Lloyd, who made it 3-1. The midfielder had won a free kick near the box and curled a beautiful shot into the top right-hand corner of the goal.

Damari Deacon then rounded out the scoring with the final kick of the game, a thumping shot from inside the six-yard box after Arnett had caught UWI on the counter-attack.
