Time for true independence
Dear Editor,
With the proposed changes to the US’s budget, the aid being sent to Jamaica could be reduced by about 90 per cent.
Whatever your views on President Donald Trump, who can blame him? The US is in a $1,000,000,000,000 debt, and by the time this letter is finished, it would have increased by US$6,000,000. Why is it wrong for any leader to look after his country’s own interests?
Instead of criticising Trump, this should be taken as a wake-up call. In fact, we knew this would happen sooner or later. We have been independent since 1962, and yet we are still relying on foreign aid?
It is time we start:
1) producing our own food;
2) making the country more attractive for businesses;
3) reducing the crime rate — which would assist in #2; and
4) introducing a culture of hard work.
The world does not owe us a living. It’s time we stop begging for handouts and reparations and start truly being independent.
