Portmore United look to go top of RSPL

Portmore United could go top of the Red Stripe Premier League if they beat the improving Waterhouse FC at Spanish Town Prison Oval, in one of four midweek games on today.

Game time is at 3:00 pm.

In the two other games at 3:00 pm, Tivoli Gardens host Boys’ Town at Edward Seaga Sports Complex, and Humble Lion travel to the University of The West Indies (UWI) at Mona Bowl. In the late encounter at 7:00 pm, Harbour View take on Cavalier SC at the Compound.

On Thursday, champions Arnett Gardens tackle Montego Bay United at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex at 6:00 pm, while at 3:00 pm, FC Reno host Sandals South Coast in the Westmoreland derby at Frome.

Second-placed Portmore United are on 28 points and trail the inactive Arnett Gardens by two points. a win against eighth-placed Waterhouse on 16 points could take them top, well at least for a day.

Portmore United are in rampant form, hunting their third-consecutive win following 5-1 and 2-0 wins over Montego Bay United and Sandals South Coast, respectively. The Shavar Thomas-coached outfit also boasts a 5-0 triumph over Waterhouse on October 16.

But since both teams met, Waterhouse have changed their coach and are showing signs of significant improvement under Donovan Duckie, having been unbeaten in their last five games.

It will be an interesting encounter and a test of Waterhouse’s new-found resolve, and an indication of how much they have improved.

Portmore United will once again be looking to the in form and seven-goal top scorer Javon East, along with Jermie Lynch and Ricardo Morris on six goals each.

Waterhouse will be depending on Andre McFarlane, Kemar Beckford, Tremaine Stewart and Nicholy Findlayson to lead their victory charge.

Meanwhile, third-placed UWI on 23 points tackle struggling Humble Lion down in 10th spot on 14 points at the Bowl. UWI defeated Humble Lion 3-1 in the first round and are confident of repeating yet another win. But Humble Lion are a talented bunch and are due to turn around their poor form, and it could begin today with a win against UWI.

The struggling Boys’ Town are rooted at the bottom of the 12-team league on seven points and must end their winless drought when they play a Tivoli Gardens team in fourth place on 23 points.

Boys’ Town have not tasted victory since the second day of the season which was some 12 games ago and the Andrew Price-coached team appears to have lost the will to win and they have to start getting positive results if they want to climb out of the relegation zone.

In the late game, Harbour View will be looking to leapfrog Cavalier SC into the final play-off spot when they meet at the Harbour View Mini Stadium. Cavalier SC are sixth with 17 points, while Harbour View are seventh on 16 points. Cavalier SC are winless in their last four games despite playing some attractive football and the stage is set for another close encounter.
