Cornwall College hunt U-14 title
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Defending ISSA/Freshhh all-island champions Cornwall College will today seek to retain the Rural Area Under-14 title when they take on Garvey Maceo High in the first game of a double-header at Manchester High set to start at 1:00 pm.
In the second game, Munro College will seek to win their second Rural Area Under-16 title in three years when they take on Vere Technical. Match time is 3:00 pm.
All four teams secured their places in today’s deciders after wins in Wednesday’s semi-finals in which St Elizabeth Technical were beaten by close margins in two games played at the St Elizabeth Sports Complex.
In Lucea, Cornwall College ended Rusea’s High’s season-long unbeaten run, winning 1-0 in a close and exciting game.
The Rusea’s team that won all three quarter-final games, scoring nine goals and conceding just twice, dominated the first half and created a number of chances.
Rusea’s had travelled to Munro College two days earlier and managed to eke out a 2-1 win after playing most of the game one player short.
Cornwall College — who had won, drawn and lost in the previous round to advance as the second-placed team — got the only scoring chance of the second half when Omreki Lindo headed home a cross from Darnel Brissett in the 57th minute.
At STETHS, Garvey Maceo booked their spot in the Under-14 final after winning in sudden-death penalty kicks after they drew 1-1 with the home team after regulation and extra time.
Later in the Under-16 game, Vere Technical held off STETHS to win 3-2 and advanced to the final where they will face Munro College who edged Glenmuir High 1-0.
Glenmuir High had travelled to Santa Cruz on Monday where they beat Herbert Morrison Technical 2-0 in a play-off after both teams ended the quarter-finals tied on points and identical goals for and goals against.
