New Year’s Day with McKay
McKay Security Limited has once again stepped forward to sponsor another New Year’s Day of racing, and the January 1 race day promises to be filled with fun and excitement. The announcement of McKay’s sponsorship was made at a press conference held at Caymanas Park on Tuesday.
The feature race on the 2018 McKay Security race day will be the 16th running of the $1-million McKay Security Trophy for $180,000 claiming horses going over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m). Should the race be divided, the purse will be $750,000 for each section. However, racing secretary Denzil Miller said that based on the feedback he is getting, the race for this year will not be divided and thus they will run for the $1 million.
Other trophy races that will be highlighting the New Year’s Day programme are the New Year’s Day Trophy and the Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) Fan Appreciation Trophy.
The New Year’s Day Trophy is for native-bred four-year-olds and upward non-winners of three, but will also include maiden and/or maiden claiming and will be run over six-and-a-half furlongs (1,300m) for a purse of $850,000. The SVREL Fan Appreciation Trophy is for Overnight Allowance company and will venture over nine furlongs and 25 yards for a purse of $1 million.
Jason Mckay, chief executive officer at McKay Security Limited, gave his company’s commitment to sponsoring the race day.
“This race day is very important, it is a very special one. It is symbolic, as come January 6, 2018, it will be 22 years since we are here at Caymanas Park. We have been here from January 6, 1996, and we survived those years because of the support from everyone in the racing industry.
“It is great to be on board here for another race day once again, and we do hope to be back next year to sponsor another New Year’s Race Day,” McKay said.
Christopher Armond, racing director at SVREL, representing chief operating officer Brando Hayden, while welcoming the sponsorship from McKay Security Limited, said that punters will be treated on the day to show them appreciation for their long and committed support to the racing industry.
“For our Fan Appreciation Day, in addition to quality racing and entertainment, lunch and drink specials will be available all day. There will also be games, giveaways and much more,” Armond declared.
