New Year, New Hair!
When talking glam for the holiday season, of course we can’t forget the hair! The frame of the face, hair is also lauded as the crown of the woman, and today Under The Dryer will help you get that crown in order. With help from natural hair guru Trudy Greenland of the Kingston branch of Jus Natural Hair Studio and the expert in everything wigs and extensions Kadie-Ann Brown of Kadie’s Beauty Salon, we’ve rounded up nine tips for a glamorous mane, inclusive of all hair types and styles. Apply these tips to the events that seem to take over the whole Christmas and New Year season and we guarantee you will be the life of the party.
1. To naturalistas wearing your manes in their most natural states, our first tip is for you. Protective styles are both functional and stylish. Experiment with styles such as cornrows, pre-twisted crochet braids and loose braids.
2. Jewellery is no longer just a means to adorn your body. GLAM up any hairstyle with hair cuffs (the most popular colours are gold, silver and red) and gold rings. This trend is not new but you will still stand out. Beads at the end of cornrows and small twists are also a long-time favourite that are slowly making their way back to pop culture..
3. Moisturise – A tip about hair care. What is more fabulous than a head of lustrous hair full of body and sheen?
4. If you struggle with getting the perfect twist out, Greenland recommends using Ecostyler’s black castor and flaxseed oil gel to set your hair for hold and body when you take down the twists.
5. This next tip is something we are all probably used to doing. A popular style, the ponytail is already simple enough, but Greenland encourages you to make it holiday-ready by using gel to slick it down and keep unruly hairs at bay. Her product favourite is the Soft Touch Edge Control. She also notes that “you can’t go wrong with a nice, loose, high-bun”.
6. Want longer tresses without the commitment? Clip-in extensions are your go-to best friend for ponytails, loose waves, bone-straight hair — the possibilities are endless. Find a texture (it’s hard to go wrong with a “kinky” or “coily” curl) that matches the colour of your hair and you will look like you spent hours in the salon in minutes!
7. “Make sure you have a wig” was Brown’s first style tip. If you want a low commitment and QUICK fix to a bad hair day, the wig is your best bet. Covering the entirety of the head, a well-constructed wig won’t even look like a wig. It will have you saying “what closure”? Of course a staple in Brown’s personal life is the popular glue Got2B Glue, which she says does not just keep wigs in place but your natural hair too.
8. Flexi rod curls are a must-have — they allow you to have mess — and damage-free curls. If you want looser, tighter or just more defined curls these are the tools for you. Brown advises you to moisturise and dampen your hair, wrap and secure small sections of hair around the rods, go about your day and when you’re ready – voilà! Pull them down for big curls.
9. Let’s not shy away from colour. Brown explains that for those who may not want colour in their hair for long periods of time, can opt for a more temporary spray can dye, it washes right out! For those a bit more daring, she recommends Adore brand dyes to be applied to bleached hair. “Just make sure you keep that hair deep-conditioned,” she warns.
