SHERWOOD CONTENT, Trelawny

Scores of adults and children from all walks of life gathered at the Waldensia All-Age School in Sherwood Content, Trelawny on Boxing Day for the annual Christmas treat put on by legendary sprinter Usain Bolt.

Digicel Foundation was the major sponsor of the treat, which involved rides, food, drink, gifts and an entertainment package, featuring a live performance from the 2017 Digicel Rising Stars winner, Akeem ‘Short Boss’ Smith.

Children and adults lined up to take pictures with the obliging track star.

The iconic athlete told the Jamaica Observer West that although he has now hung up his spikes, he is still committed to staging the annual fete, especially for the children.

“It doesn’t matter that I retire, I will always try to do something. I have noticed that every year it seems to get bigger with more people, so it’s for the community and many people to come and support it … the sponsors are always willing, especially Digicel is always willing to be a big part of this, so I am really happy about it,” Bolt said.

“It is really great coming back and everybody telling you that they are proud and just to remember where you come from. I never thought I would accomplish this feat coming from this rural community in Jamaica, so it’s always a big deal for me.”

The Sherwood Content native also used the opportunity to encourage the youth to go after their dreams.

“I was good at athletics and was good at cricket, but I never thought I would get to this level. It is something that always amazes me, so that is why I always tell kids that you can do anything. Never try to limit yourself because no matter where you come from, when you get your chance you just have to take it. Anything is possible, don’t limit yourself,” Bolt encouraged.

Meanwhile, the event not only attracted people from across the island, but Sherwood Content natives who now live abroad.

Among them was Audley Hines, who migrated to England nearly six decades ago.

“I am very proud to be from Sherwood [Content], which has produced such an iconic figure,” said Hines.

Kev Henlon, who migrated to the United States over 30 years ago, was also enthused.

“It’s a nice feeling. To be honest I feel proud as a Sherwood man,” Henlon maintained.

Bolt’s uncle, Andrew Davis, was also proud of his nephew’s accomplishments and his giving back to the community.

“It’s a great feeling, I am extremely proud to know that he is giving back to the community in such a way and get everybody together. I am glad to know that a legendary figure like Usain is not only from the community, but is also a member of the family,” Davis told the Observer West.
