Combine hopefuls

4 Jamaicans on show as MLS Caribbean Combine kicks off in Florida today

St Andrew Technical High School’s (STATHS) outstanding goalkeeper Jeadine White along with three other Jamaicans — Alex Marshall, Maalique Foster and Oneil Anderson — are among 23 players that will strut their stuff at the 2018 Major League Soccer (MLS) Caribbean Combine in Florida starting today.

The fifth annual Combine features young players between the ages of 18 and 21 from 16 Caribbean member associations and will be conducted from January 9-11 at the Sawgrass Hotel and Suites Sports Complex outside Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

It will provide access to high-level professional scouting with an aim to get into the main MLS Player Combine on January 11-17 in Orlando and then the 2018 MLS Super Draft on the 19th in Philadelphia.

Players will compete in front of MLS scouts for three days, for the potential to be signed directly by an MLS club during an upcoming transfer window.

“This, the fifth-annual Caribbean Combine is the fruit of on-going collaboration between CONCACAF and Major League Soccer, and represents the Confederation’s commitment to unlocking new modes of access to the sport at all levels for all its Member Associations and their players,” said CONCACAF Director of Caribbean Football, Horace Reid.

“Providing professional opportunity for these young players — ages 18-21 — complements other Confederation initiatives to enhance the club game across the region, including recently expanded club competition platforms for the Caribbean Club Championship and the Scotiabank CONCACAF League,” Reid added.

White had an outstanding season in goal while leading STATHS to the final of the ISSA Manning Cup, the Walker Cup semi-final and the Super Cup quarter-final. The Cavalier Soccer Club goalkeeper will be looking to join Jamaica’s number one goalkeeper Andre Blake, who was drafted number one in the MLS Super Draft in 2014.

Another Cavalier SC player Marshall, formerly of St George’s College, will try his luck as an attacking midfielder, while the diminutive Portmore player Foster is listed as a forward. He has scored three goals this season for Portmore United, the seven-point leaders of the Red Stripe Premier League.

Arnett Gardens’ Oniel Anderson is the only defender from Jamaica on the list and he will compete with three other centre backs from St Maarten, Dominica and Antigua.

2018 MLS Caribbean Combine Player Pool:

Oniel Anderson (JAM); Jeff Beljour (TCA); Mazhye Burchall (BER); Thierry Catherine (MTQ); Jonah Ebanks (CAY); Kyle Edwards (VIN); Djai Essed (SXM); Maalique Foster (JAM); Jules Haabo (GUF); Hadan Holligan (BRB); Germain Hughes (AIA); Andrez Joseph (DMA); Tyrique Lake (AIA); Alex Marshall (JAM); Gylles Mitchel (DMA); Yohannes Mitchum (SKN); Nickenson Paul (ARU); Na-jir Jacques Peney (CUW); Jamarlie Stevens (ATG); Kathon St. Hillaire (TRI); Josiah Trimmingham (TRI); Gregorio van der Biezen (ARU) and Jeadine White/GK (JAM).
