JAMAICA Scorpions will be looking to complete victory on today’s final day of their ninth-round regional four-day game against Leeward Islands Hurricanes, after rain interrupted their progress on yesterday’s penultimate day at Sabina Park.

The Hurricanes, chasing a target of 262, were 159-6, still requiring a further 103 runs with only four wickets in tact when rain brought an early end to proceedings.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Jahmar Hamilton, on five, and Jeremiah Louis, on three, are to resume batting for the visitors. Play is scheduled to begin 9:30 am today to make up for lost time.

Devon Thomas, who was previously contracted with the Scorpions, led the Hurricanes resistance with a well-played 52 of 109 balls, including five boundaries and one six. Opening batsman Montcin Hodge is the next best scorer so far with 45.

John Campbell has been the pick of the Scorpions bowling attack with 3-12 from eight overs, with leg-spinner Damion Jacobs accounting for two wickets.

Earlier, the Scorpions resuming on 182-7, pushed on to 235 all out to set the Hurricanes a victory target of 262.

Medium pacer Sheno Berridge was the pick of the Hurricanes bowlers with 5-59, supported by off-spinner Chaim Holder who had 2-57.

Scores: Scorpions 197 (59.1 overs) and 235 (59.1 overs); Hurricanes 171 (78.3 overs) and 159-6 (60.3 overs).

The Scorpions picked up from their overnight score with Damion Jacobs and Derval Green adding 29 to the total before the latter, who seemed in an aggressive mood with 19 from 20 deliveries was adjudged leg-before-wicket to Berridge.

Jacobs, who started the day on one, went on to make 17, as he partnered with Captain Nikita Miller (13) to add a further 23 runs to the total, before they both fell one run apart, caught off the bowling of Berridge.

The Hurricanes went in chase of the target positively courtesy of Captain Kieran Powell and Montcin Hodge, who posted an opening stand of 43, after taking the visitors to lunch at 35 without loss.

Powell (16) was first man out when he mistimed his shot off Jacobs and was caught in the deep by Green coming off the boundary ropes.

Young Keacy Carty, who posted a good-looking half-century in the first innings, had a brief stay in the middle this time around before he was bowled by Miller.

With the score at 52-2, Hodge found a worthy ally in Devon Thomas and the two went about business in a 49-run stand for the third wicket which halted the Scorpions momentum.

The aggressive intent of Thomas provided his former franchise with a few close shaves, as he barely survived a close run out appeal and a stumping chance in quick succession.

But the Scorpions found fortunes at the other end when Hodge skied one to Jermaine Blackwood off Jacobs, falling five runs shy of what would have been a deserved half-century. His innings, which required 95 deliveries, includes three boundaries and two big sixes.

Despite Hodge’s demise, the Hurricanes continued to score quickly with Akeem Saunders firing 22 in a 33-run stand with Thomas, but went for one big hit too many and holed out to Green in giving Campbell his first scalp.

Thomas played well to raise his half-century, but fell soon after when Campbell found his edge for Blackwood to take a hang on to a snappy catch in the slip cordon on the second attempt.

After restricting the Hurricanes to 146-5 at the tea interval, the Scorpions would have scented victory, but a delay to the resumption due to a rain interruption slowed their progress.

However, it was not long before they got back into the groove and picked up his third victim when Shane Burton (seven) went too far back into his crease and knocked over his wicket.

The heavens later opened at minutes after four and no further play was possible for the day.
