Cavalier Soccer Club came from a goal down at half-time to whip relegation-threatened Boys’ Town 4-1 courtesy of goals from Nicholas Hamilton, Kaheem Parris, Alex Marshall and new signee Paul Wilson.

Javaughn Mitchell got the goal for Boys’ Town.

The game, which was the penultimate match of the second round for both teams, was played at the Stadium East Field on Sunday and saw Cavalier close the gap on third-placed Tivoli Gardens to just three points with the result. Boys’ Town remain rooted to the foot of the table.

The game started off well for Boys’ Town, who went ahead in the 22nd minute when a persistent Mitchell scored at the second time of asking after Jeadine White had blocked his first effort at close range.

Neither goalkeeper was seriously threatened for the rest of the half although Boys’ Town had two penalty appeals waved away by referee Leon Brown — first a hand ball appeal, then for a foul on their captain Daemion Benjamin by Cavalier captain Chevone Marsh.

The hosts appeared a different team in the second half and the introduction of Parris would prove to be the game changer later on.

Playing at a higher tempo in the second half, Cavalier drew level in the 56th minute when Hamilton scored with a tap-in from almost on the goal line after being supplied with a pass from Marsh. The entire Boys’ Town defence had collapsed on the skilful left-footed player, leaving Hamilton free in the box to roll the ball into the net.

Parris then put his team ahead nine minutes later with a stunning free-kick that beat goalkeeper Mihkail Harrison at his near post. The spot-kick had been won by Marsh, who was brought down by Garfield Gillespie, who was yellow-carded for the foul.

The hosts were buzzing and went in for the kill. Hamilton missed a chance to add to his tally when he failed to make proper contact at the back post with a well- delivered cross from Jamoi Topey.

But there was no real let-up by the young Cavalier team who ran the weary “aging legs” of the Boys’ Town players ragged.

They were 3-1 to the good nine minutes after taking the lead, when Alex Marshall stroked home from inside the area. The chance was almost lost when the ball rolled away but the fleet-footed player regained control before finding the back of the net to break the spirit of the visitors.

The only shot on target from Boys’ Town in the second half was a tame effort from Andre Dawson, which was easily saved by White.

Marsh, who had been a thorn in the side of the entire Boys’ Town team all game, probably deserved to score but was denied at point-blank range by Harrison.

Wilson, who had missed a gilt-edged chance earlier, was not to be denied on debut and rounded out the scoring when he latched on to a perfectly weighed pass from Marsh to fire home with the last kick of the game.

“This is our biggest victory since the start of the season, so yes we are happy,” said a delighted Rudolph Speid, head coach of Cavalier SC.

“We looked at the first-half performance and determined that we should not have been behind based on the run of play. They only scored from a set play. Once we identified that there was no real threat to score against us we decided to play a little bit different. We stretched the team more with wider players and we made a change. We brought on a more skilful player in young Parris and from there on Boys’ Town was playing catch-up,” he explained.

“Parris said those free kicks are penalties for me that is why I shouted across for him to take it. We turned the game into a running game and with the quickness and the skill level of our players we knew they couldn’t match us,” Speid concluded.

“Indiscipline crept into the team. We were disorganised in the second half and we just never played with any zest,” said a visibly upset Andrew Price, the long-time Boys’ Town head coach.

“We only played 45 minutes of football today and we paid the price. We just didn’t close down Cavalier in the second half and we allowed them to play. We were marking them close and giving them attention in the first half and all of a sudden in the second half we just went to pieces,” he continued.

“We have to try and start winning some games, that is what we have to try to do and we have to try and find the right combination.

“It’s not over! We have 12 more games in the season and we are going to have to find a way of winning games and we have to find people who want to play,” Price concluded with a steely determination in his voice.

With nine wins now under their belt and 34 points in their pockets, Cavalier have moved to within two points of third-placed Tivoli Gardens, but for Boys’ Town their 13th loss of the season leaves them floundering in last place and with the threat of relegation looming large with a miserly 12 points from 21 games played.
