MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison Technical could today rewrite their own history with a fourth consecutive double championship win in the ISSA Western Conference boys’ basketball competition when they take a one-nil lead into Game Two of the best-of-three finals of both the Under-16 and Under-19 categories at Montego Bay Cricket Club.

Herbert Morrison beat William Knibb Memorial 60-45 in Under-16 action and Spot Valley High 69-65 in the Under-19 section.

The third-place play-offs in both sections will precede the second games in today’s marquee matchups. Cornwall College are set to meet Rhodes Hall in the Under-16 consolation game, while Muschett High and Holland will meet in the Under-19 game.

On Monday, Herbert Morrison beat Rhodes Hall in one Under-16 semi-final game, while William Knibb edged Cornwall College 69-66 in the other after coming from a point down with 15 seconds to go.

In the Under-19 semi-finals, Herbert Morrison hammered Holland High 76-29, while Spot Valley beat Muschett High 60-58.

In the first game of the best-of-three finals on Wednesday, Herbert Morrison came back from a first-quarter 11-16 deficit to beat William Knibb Memorial, outscoring the Trelawny school 49-20 over the next three quarters.

Led by a game-high 21 points from Kyle Fraser, Herbert Morrison took over the game in the second quarter and led 27-22 at half-time, and were up by 17 points 45-28 at the end of the third quarter.

Anthony Thorpe had a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals for Herbert Morrison, while Rhondane Ashman scored 17 points and had 21 rebounds for William Knibb.

In the U-19 clash, five players scored in double figures for Herbert Morrison as they just managed to hold off Spot Valley High, who led by a point at the end of the third quarter.

Herbert Morrison were ahead 21-16 at the end of the first quarter and 35-29 at half-time, but Spot Valley turned up their defence and held the champions to just nine points in the third quarter and led 45-44 going into the final quarter.

Spot Valley, who are on a good run since late last year, recovered from a slow start to tie up the scores at 13-all with three minutes to go in the first quarter and, after trailing for long periods, rallied to 43-44 late in the third before edging ahead.

Herbert Morrison, however, held on to take the lead as Brendan Dawkins led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds, David Gordon had 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Alek Gilchrist added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Spot Valley’s Giovanni Bailey had a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds while Roger Hines scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds.
