Calabar High School sent their strongest signal yet this season that they are intent on retaining the Mortimer Geddes trophy come the 24th of March.

The boys from Red Hills Road were in a no-nonsense mood at the Queen’s/Grace Jackson Invitational Meet at the National Stadium last Saturday.

Beginning with the 400m, the Michael Clarke-coached boys swept the top spot in all three classes — Garth Henry winning in 52.14secs in Class Three; Evaldo Whitehorne winning in Class Two in 48.53secs, and Anthony Carpenter winning in 47.45secs in Class One.

Carpenter returned later in the afternoon to claim the Class One 200m in a record time of 21.19secs, showing his readiness with more than six weeks to go.

The Class Two boys’ 200m was won by Javari Thomas of St Jago in 21.97secs, Rajae Morris of Clarendon College (21.99secs) was second and Kalonji Grant of St George’s College 22.44secs, third. The Class Three event went to KC’s Bouwahgjie Nkrumie (22.6secs), David Lynch of Calabar was second in 23.1secs and Adrian Kerr of KC 23.3secs, third.

They swept the Class Three boys’ 100m hurdles with David Thomas (14.05secs) first, David Williams (14.09secs) second and Ellado Coltas (14.26secs) third. In Class Two Jerome Campbell (14.39secs) was second behind Vashaun Vascianna (13.89secs) of St Jago. KC’s Tajae Francis was third in 14.9secs. Only in Class One did they fail to make top three as Phillip Limonious of Jamaica College was first in 13.77secs, Wayne Pinnock of Kingston College second in 13.91secs, and Rasheed Broadbell of St Jago High third in 14.09secs.

While Dwayne Moore of Spalding took the Class One boys’ 800m in 1:54.73minutes, the Calabar pair of Kimar Farquharson (1:55.58) and Devannah Gayle (1:55.94) finished second and third, as they flexed their muscles in the middle distance event.

Rasheed Downer won the Class One boys’ shot put for KC with a throw of 17.24m and he was followed home by the Calabar pair of Cobe Graham (17.13m) and Deandre Leith (16.16m). KC finished first and second in Class Two — Ralford Mullings 15.15m, and Nemoy Cockett 14.99m, while Zackery Dillion of Calabar (14.30m) was third.

In the Class Two boys’ discus, Calabar were first and second, as Zackery Dillion with a throw of 51.76m and Shandane Adamson (48.97m) beat KC’s Nemoy Cockett (46.72m) into third place. Calabar also picked up second and third in the Class One boys’ discus, Kai Chang 56m and Leith 48.48m following behind St Jago Roje Stona.

They continued doing the double in the Class Three boys’ long jump, as Pavel Lawrence was first with 6.07m, Javar Thomas second with 5.67, and J’Havier Lynch of Wolmer’s third with 5.50m.

The Class One boys’ high jump saw another second and third place finish. Andrew Betton and Alexander Thompson both topping out at 2m, while favourite Lushane Wilson of St Jago won with 2.10m.

They also won the 4x400m Open in 3:11.25, trailed home by Knox Community College (3:15.33) and Holmwood Technical (3:17.14).

On the girls’ side Holmwood swept the 400m with Rickianna Russell (56.02secs) winning Class Three, Colisha Taylor won Class Two in 55.85secs and Kadeja Campbell won Class One in 55.13secs.

In the sprint hurdles, Quaycian Davis of St Jago won the 70m for Class Four in 10.96secs, Marisa Simpson of Clarendon College (11.85secs) in Class Three, Ackera Nugent of Excelsior High (13.48secs) in Class Two, and Britany Anderson of Camperdown High took the Class One event in a new record time of 13.70secs.

St Jago won the 200m in two classes — Quaycian Davis in Class Four in 25.87secs and Brianna Lyston in Class Three in 24.59secs. Aaliyah Duckett of Clan Carthy took Class Two in 21.8secs and Michae Harriott of Holmwood took Class One in a new record of 23.49secs.

St Jago ruled the discus, Gabrielle Bailey winning Class One with a throw of 47.56m, while Abbigail Parchment won Class Two with a record throw of 40.51m.

Excelsior High swept the Class Two girls’ high jump, Shantae Foreman winning with 1.75m, followed by Danielle Hinds and Kaliah Jones who both cleared 1.70m. In Class One, Toniann Farquharson cleared 1.60m for first, winning on countback over Janella Francis of Excelsior High, who also cleared 1.60m. Keneva Headley of Holmwood was third with a clearance of 1.55m.

The consistent Aiko Jones of Wolmer’s High School for Girls was first in the Class One shot put with 13.50m, while Gabrielle Bailey was second with 12.59m. Shanice Brown of Kingston High rounded out the top three with a throw of 12.01m. Holmwood Technical’s Shakera Williams wook Class Two with a throw of 12.77m.

Lori Choy of Immaculate won the Class Four long jump with 4.89m, Dayshanae Hall of St Jago won Class Three with 5.44m, and Keneva Headley of Holmwood won Class One with 5.63m.

Holmwood A also took the 4x400m Open in 3:42.33, their B team was second in 3:46.95 and St Jago were third in 3:50.90.
