Make dump fire reports public, address the cause, says Brown Burke
KINGSTON, Jamaica — People’s National Party (PNP) Spokesperson on Local Government Dr Angela Brown Burke is calling on the Government to make reports on the cause of fires at the island’s disposal sites public knowledge.
Brown Burke, in a release today, argued that the public must be privy to any investigative report that indicates the major causes of these fires so that the root causes can be addressed in the short term.
“The issue of security is one that needs to be addressed, but care needs to be taken to place the blame where it belongs without speculating,” Brown Burke said, adding that there is no doubt that a long-term plan is needed and the pace at which government is moving is too slow.
“Each instance of fire heaps greater burden on individuals who are already finding it difficult to afford healthcare and puts added pressure on the already under-resourced healthcare facilities,” she said.
Brown Burkeadded that the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) needs to ensure that technically competent managers are in place to manage the disposal sites.
In recent weeks fires have been set at the Retirement site in St James and Riverton City in St Andrew.
