KINGSTON, Jamaica —The Police High Command and the Police Federation have condemned the murder of a policeman, who was shot multiple times by a lone gunman in Petersfield, Westmoreland on Sunday.

The slain cop has been identified as Constable Rohan Bucknor, who was assigned to the Little London Police Station.

According to reports, Bucknor was at a barbershop in the community getting a haircut when he was attacked. He died later.

The High Command last evening in a statement expressing condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the slain police officer, said it remains concerned that attacks against members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are committed by criminals when officers are off duty and in vulnerable situations.

In a separate statement, Chairman of the Police Federation, Corporal Arleen McBean, said “The citizens of Jamaica must now accept that there is a calculated attack on law and order within our society; where scant regard is shown for human life and where criminals believe that they can carry out brazen attacks on members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the citizenry of Jamaica”.

The High Command pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident in order to bring those responsible to justice and reminded members of the police force that the threat level against police officers remains high.

It further urged officers to remain vigilant and to take swift and decisive action to protect themselves and their families.

The appeal was echoed by the Police Federation, which pleaded to rank and file officers to remain resolute but calm and tactful in the face of scorn, danger, ridicule and imminent threat, and continue to embrace their Oath of Office.

“… Even as we mourn the loss of another colleague at the hands of coward criminals, they must remember that self- preservation is key and encourage them to continue giving professional and unwavering service to the citizens of Jamaica,” the Federation said.
