Despite ranking 148 places below Jamaica, the Cayman Islands arrived in Kingston on Saturday a confident bunch, looking to upstage the Reggae Boyz as they kick off their Concacaf Nations League qualifier inside National Stadium at 7:00 pm.

Jamaica are ranked 54th in the world and the Cayman Islands are way down at 202, but that disparity means little when both teams meet today for the away team’s coach.

In 10 previous meetings, Cayman Islands have tasted victory only once — in 1994. Jamaica have won eight times with one drawn game.

In their last encounter, Jamaica ran out easy 4-1 winners in 2009, but Cayman Coach Elbert McLean remains optimistic of creating an upset.

“We know Jamaica is a tough, tough, tough opponent, but we will also take this to see where we are and where we need to be, and playing against Jamaica we can learn a lot,” said McLean.

“The preparation has been going pretty OK. It’s been a while since we have a senior national team and the team that we put together is very young. But hopefully we can grow and learn as we go along,” he added.

The Concacaf Nations League features 34 of the region’s 40 currently eligible teams playing on four match dates, from September 2018 to March 2019.

The matches will determine which 10 teams will join Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, United States, and Trinidad and Tobago in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

“Right now it’s very good for the region. We are a small country and we don’t get too much international exposure, and we can only get better in these tournaments,” said McLean.

The Cayman squad has been training for the last several months under McLean, and recently Belgian coach Joey Jar Tjong joined the team as assistant coach.

Cayman will next play the Dominican Republic in October before hosting St Lucia in November and Montserrat in March.
