She’s A Maneater breaks $28-million purse barrier

ANOTHER notch has been added to the distinguished bridle of Horse of the Year, She’s A Maneater when she became the first horse in the history of thoroughbred racing in Jamaica to earn over $28 million in purse money.

She’s A Maneater achieved this feat on Saturday, September 8, 2018 after winning the six furlongs (1,200 metres), None Such Sprint in a pulsating finish also involving Chace The Great and Money Magnet. The four-year-old filly’s total earnings now stands at an incredible $28,135,600. She has a total, thus far, of 15 wins from 18 starts.

Next in line on the all-time list of top earners is former Derby and two times Diamond Mile winner Seeking My Dream who has amassed $26,636,650 in purse money over the years he has been racing for owner, Derrick Smith. Unfortunately, Seeking My Dream’s career has lately been hampered by injuries and he might not race for the rest of this racing year.

Occupying third spot on the list is the tough and competitive Perfect Neighbour who at age eight is still racing among the best on offer. Perfect Neighbour has now earned $25,990,900.

Of special note is the fact that the top three money earners are all still running and are all trained by champion conditioner, Wayne DaCosta.

Triple Crown winner Mark My Word trained by Richard Azan, the leader in this category for a long while, is in fourth position. Mark My Word with 16 wins from 25 starts earned $24,485,750 during his racing career.

The first filly on the list is St Cecelia in fifth place. Trained during her racing days by Spencer Chung, St Cecelia has the most wins of the top five money earners with 24 victories from 37 starting opportunities for total earnings of $21,451,950.

There are some interesting observations than can be taken for the top five on the list of all-time money earnings.

The top four ( She’s A Maneater, Seeking My Dream, Mark My Word and Perfect Neighbour are all winners of the Derby, with the odd one out being St Cecelia, while two of the lot, She’s A Maneater and Mark My Word are Triple Crown holders. The top two ( She’s A Maneater and Seeking My Dream are the only horses to date with a victory in the Diamond Mile.

Chung is further represented in the top 10 by former winner of the Derby and multiple Superstakes conqueror, Typewriter. Typewriter in his distinguished career won 14 races from 35 starts with lifetime earnings of $20,243,650.

The only other horse in the top 10, still racing is number eight, Bigdaddykool trained by Anthony Nunes who thus far in his career has won eight races from 23 starts with his earnings being just over $17 million.
