TAJ arrests delinquent taxpayers in St Catherine
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is reporting that its Special Enforcement Team (SET) is collaborating with the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s St Catherine North and South Divisions and is currently arresting several “chronically delinquent” taxpayers in Spanish Town and Portmore.
The operation titled “Old Capital 2.1” is targeting tax evaders for whom the Spanish Town Parish Court have issued arrest warrants, TAJ said.
“The operation which began early this morning targeted 10 chronically delinquent taxpayers who the tax authority had brought court action against for failure to pay taxes. These taxpayers have since refused to appear in court. The operation is expected to continue for several hours,” the tax authority said.
TAJ said it continues to carry out enforcement activities to ensure the protection of the revenue.
Taxpayers are encouraged to speak with the Tax Authority to make suitable arrangements, if they are faced with difficulties in honouring their tax obligations, particularly where a judgement has been handed down by the court.
“Failure to comply with a court order will result in strong enforcement action to recover the outstanding amounts,” TAJ warned.
