MBU, Reno play out dour 0-0 draw
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Montego Bay United (MBU) and FC Reno both missed a big chance to move up in the points table after playing out a drab, lifeless, and almost catatonic 0-0 draw in their Red Stripe Premier League game at Montego Bay Sports Complex on Monday night.
Both teams came into the game hoping to staunch the flow of goals against them and this was achieved, but at the expense of attractive football both coaches thereafter admitted they did not make the most of the few chances they created, as they both made defensive discipline their main objective.
MBU are yet to win at home and have drawn their last three games played in Montego Bay, after losing their opening game to Tivoli Gardens. They have stayed in eighth place on nine points from seven games, while FC Reno remain in 10th place on seven points, just one above the relegation zone.
First-season coach Vassell Reynolds, whose team has conceded 10 goals in its previous six games — including five in a loss to Cavalier FC the previous week — said they met a part of their objective for the game.
“The first order of the day for us was to stop conceding after 10 goals in six games so the aim was to keep a clean sheet, but we could have done better in attack.”
Reynolds admitted the game lacked life. “I think we needed more energy in attack; I don’t think we created enough opportunities. I think we needed to keep the ball a little longer and we did not do enough combination play in the attack.”
He said they started slowly and “were a bit sloppy in attack in the first half defensively; and we minimised their chances in the second half but we did not capitalise in attack. I am a bit disappointed in the number of chances we created.”
Godfrey Drummond, the FC Reno coach, said they could have won the game had they capitalised. “I think the game had its ebbs and flows and I thought we created enough opportunities to score at least a goal, and if we got that goal we would have taken the game today.”
He was not completely pleased with how his players executed, however. “No, not 100 per cent. We set out some objectives as we saw where we were giving up goals and decided to stem the flow and we did that today, but that was 50 per cent of the job. The next thing we have to do now is get goals — that has been our main issue this year so far.”
FC Reno have managed just three goals in their seven games played, by far the least of any of the 12 teams in the competition, while MBU have given up the joint-second most.
