CATHERINE HALL, St James — Wolmer’s Boys’ and Cornwall College will meet today in the second game of a double-header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in the first round of the ISSA Champions Cup Knockout competition.

The game will follow the 4:00 pm opener between first-time qualifiers Frome Technical and Camperdown High with all four schools seeking a berth to the quarter-finals set for next Saturday, November 10.

While both Corporate Area schools are vying for the only silverware still available to them this season, having been eliminated from contention for the Manning Cup, both Frome Technical and Cornwall College are still in the daCosta Cup and will meet in the semi-finals later this month.

Wolmer’s promised much early in the season, topping their first-round group by winning eight of 10 games and scoring 26 goals but since then have had problems finding the net with seven goals in their next five games.

The second game today is expected to be the more competitive of the two between two well-coached teams but Cornwall College could enjoy the ‘home field’ advantage and with a point to prove.

Shavon McDonald and Aiden Jokomba, the two senior leaders of the team, are the only holdovers from the 2016 team that came so close to winning the all-island title and are expected to lead the team forward today.

In the first game, both teams are coming off losses but while Camperdown High were dumped out of the Manning Cup, Frome Technical scored a big ‘consolation’ goal that saw them edge Mile Gully on more goals scored.

Frome Technical have had an inconsistent year but the Aaron Lawrence-coached team has always managed to get it right when it matters most.
