Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth ­­– St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) are one of just two daCosta Cup teams that survived the first round of the ISSA Champions Cup, after upsetting defending champions Kingston College 6-5 in sudden death penalties in the repeat of last year’s final at Sabina Park on Friday night.

Four other central based schools, Garvey Maceo High, Manchester High, Mile Gully High and Clarendon College, were all dumped out of the competition as six Manning Cup teams will be in the draw for the second round.

Cornwall College from Montego Bay is the other daCosta Cup team that will seek to end the Kingston dominance, beating Wolmer’s Boys’ 3-2 on penalties after they played out a 1-1 draw at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.

On Friday’s opening night of the cash-rich competition, STETHS who were beaten 3-0 in the final last year by Kingston College, won 6-5 in sudden death penalties after they played out a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Kevaun Garwood gave “under-dog” STETHS the lead after 28 minutes as the daCosta Cup team shook off a lazy start and led 1-0 at half time.

But minutes after he came on in the second half Ugandan Aryamanya Rodgers was fouled on the edge of the 18 yards box and Jamari Morrison curled a brilliant left-footed free kick high into the STETHS goal beating goalkeeper Devonte Clarke.

With the penalties tied at 3-3, STETHS’ Tajae Palmer stepped up to take the kick that would have won the game but instead hit the ball high and wide handing the Manning Cup team a life line.

Clarke, who also scored a spot kick, saved KC’s eighth attempt before Davian Brown kept his nerve and scored the winner.

Meanwhile, Clarendon College were upset by Charlie Smith High, beaten 2-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1 in regulation.

Duran Panton’s 88th minute goal forced the penalty kicks after Trivante Stewart’s 25th minute goal had given Charlie Smith the lead.

Garvey Maceo’s season ended in a whimper, after promising much, when they were beaten 0-2 by St George’s College with goals from Emelio Rouseau in the first minute and Damani Harris in the 30th.

Garvey Maceo High lost their last two games of the season after winning the first 13 and appeared on their way to the top four, but lost 2-3 to Cornwall College in the quarterfinals of the daCosta Cup to finish second, then lost on Friday.

Manchester High gave up a 1-0 lead to St Andrew Technical as the teams ended at 1-1. They then lost 3-4 on penalty kicks in a contentious, drama-packed clash in Santa Cruz.

Mile Gully ended their best season, beaten 0-4 by Jamaica College, but left their mark, advancing as a best third place team and creating history by beating top seed and last year’s daCosta Cup champions Rusea’s High, going all the way to the quarterfinals. They missed a spot in the semi-finals on fewer goals after being tied with Frome Technical on six points and a goal-difference of two.
