Man shot while attempting to flee burning home in St Elizabeth
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — Detectives in St Elizabeth are probing the circumstances surrounding a case of murder and arson in Long Common, Bogue in the parish today.
Dead is 35-year-old Mauri Campbell of Long Common.
Reports are that about 1:50 am, Campbell was at home with other occupants when they were awakened by smoke and fire in a section of the eight-apartment dwelling they share. It is alleged that in their attempt to escape the home, they were attacked by an armed man who opened gunfire on the group during which Campbell was shot.
The police and the Santa Cruz Fire Department were summoned and, on their arrival, the fire was extinguished and the charred remains of Campbell were found in a room in the house.
The other occupants of the house escaped unhurt.
The house and a Toyota Corolla motor car were destroyed by the fire, however, the value for both has not yet been ascertained.
