Western Wheels gets the winning job done
THE nicely bred three-year-old chestnut filly Western Wheels got into the winners’ column with a promising come from behind win in a maiden condition race on Saturday, February 23, 2019.
Trained by Anthony “Baba” Nunes, Western Wheels ( Western Classic – Wheels of Law) came with a strong run in the final stages of the race to win by three parts of a length over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course.
The final time of 1:01.2 was not impressive considering the level at which the three-year-olds are now at, but the manner in which Western Wheels overcame a slow start and won, does give reason for some hope.
Ridden by Robert Halledeen, Western Wheels was slowly into stride when the gates opened and raced off the pace as Nuclear Evita (Kiaman McGregor) on the inside rails, Just Trick Me (Omar Walker) in the middle of track and Nuclear Weapon (Linton Steadman) showed good speed.
Western Wheels continued to race behind the leaders even passing the dummy rails and at one point it looked as if she would not get the job done.
But when Halledeen asked her for everything, Western Wheels responded and came with a telling run on the outside of runners to get home.
Cairo (Trevor Simpson) also came with a strong run in the end for second money with speedster Nuclear Evita getting third place.
