‘Jungle’ to come alive with Bob Marley One Love charity matches
All is set and ready for the 38th staging of the Bob Marley One Love football charity matches at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex today, where a host of celebrities will be in action.
Adults are being asked to pay $500, while children will contribute $100 and kids under 12 years old will enter free. Proceeds from the event will be used to assist basic schools islandwide.
Organiser of the event, Clive “Busy” Campbell, said it will be a day to remember as four teams will compete in a round robin format, where each team will play three 30-minute games.
“All is in place and we are looking forward to a fun-filled afternoon,” said Campbell.
This year, the Entertainers Invitational, and Referees Invitational, and Christian Ambassadors teams will be joined by Jamaica’s Under-17 and Under-20 Reggae Girlz.
National head coach and World Cup two-goal hero, Theodore “Tappa” Whitmore will be in action for the Referees Invitational, along with former Reggae Boyz captain Shavar Thomas — now head coach of Portmore United; referees Karl Tyrell, Kevin Morrison, Keeble Williams; Rudolph Speid, technical director of Cavalier; Marcel Gayle, coach of Waterhouse; and Kevin”Pele” Wilson, to name a few.
Once again singer Chris Martin will lead the Entertainers and Masters Invitational, along with the likes of Sasco, Ward 21, Ibhomars, Tony Curtis, Lukie D, Nomadz, Shortboss, Ian “Pepe” Goodison, Jermaine Gonzales, Ricardo “Bibi”Gardner, cricketer Nikita Miller, and Jah Mikes.
The Christian Ambassador team will have the likes of Pastor Garfield Robinson, Rev Devon Dick, David Lalor, Wayne Clacken, Mark Miller, Vincent Ross, Damian English and Romaine Millington.
The Reggae Gilz will kick off the proceedings at 4:00 pm when they tackle Christian Ambassadors, then they play the Referees Invitational at 4:35 and conclude their games against the Entertainers at 5:10 pm. The other teams will play each other.
Reggae icons Jimmy Cliff and Nadine Sutherland will be this year’s honorees, along with Arnett Gardens Manager George Phang. Last year’s honorees, Lincoln Roberts (Half Pint) and Winston Morris (Tony Tuff) will also collect their awards.
