Let them debate
Dear Editor,
I stand with the request of Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips for a debate in the constituency of Portland Eastern.
What better way is there for the candidates to inform constituents, from the heart, the plans they bring to the table?
On a political platform, both candidates may say anything. In a manifesto, crafted carefully along party lines, the candidates are also able to write just about anything. We have seen it often enough — scores of promises and pretty words printed on a piece of paper but it has never materialised. Debates ensure that there is no miscommunication or blatant attempt at deceive.
In this day and age, Jamaicans across the political divide deserve quality representation. Why should Portland Easterners vote for a candidate who is timid to face them and argue the points? What will happen on the parliamentary floor then? Let us remember that the Parliament is a place designed for people who are quick and are able to speak directly and eloquently in order to get things done. I honestly think it makes for good practice.
I hope the Government considers the principles of democracy on this one. A debate cannot hurt either candidate if they are prepared and serious about representation.
What it will do, more than anything, is make the people win.
