Semis battle
HOPEWELL, Hanover — The equation will be simple for Hopewell United and Falmouth United on Sunday when the third round of the Jamaica Football Federation Western Confederation Charley’s JB Rum Super League comes to a close — win and you are into the semi-finals.
Second-year team Hopewell United are in third place on 28 points, one more than new- comers Falmouth United, and they will be seeking a first-time spot in the semi-finals where they would join Faulkland FC, and defending champions Wadadah FC, both of who have secured the two top spots respectively.
However, two other teams, Sandals South Coast on 26 points, and Harmony FC on 25 points, will be seeking to create upsets and take the two remaining semi-final spots.
Hopewell United will host fifth-placed Sandals South Coast at the Orchard Sports Complex in Hopewell, while Falmouth United tackle the relegated former champions Granville United at Elleston Wakeland Centre, both games set to start at 3:30pm.
Also on Sunday, Reggae Youths will host Harmony at the UDC field, while three games will be played on Saturday—-Faulkland FC will seek to keep their unbeaten record intact when they face Grand Palladium at Rusea’s High; Wadadah FC host Somerton FC at the UDC field and Delveland PYC and Lucea United will meet at Delveland.
Six teams have been relegated—-Grand Palladium, Granville United, Lucea United, Somerton FC, Delveland PYC and Reggae Youths—-and will return to parish football next season.
The last four teams are normally relegated, but with Montego Bay United and FC Reno returning from the Red Stripe Premier League, space had to be made for two more teams.
And while Falmouth United are expected to win against what is expected to be a demoralised Granville United, at home, Hopewell must guard against an ambitious Sandals South Coast who will be seeking a spot of their own.
With Harmony FC likely to get the better of Reggae Youths and move to 28 points, the pressure will be on the other three teams to win to make sure of their spots in the semis that will be played on April 21 and 28.
Hopewell United have won just once in their last three outings, a come from behind 2-1 win that confirmed Granville United’s demotion on Sunday, and will hope to carry the momentum over into Sunday’s game. They will play a Sandals South Coast team that have not lost in their last 11 outings.
Falmouth United rebounded from a loss to Faulkland FC two weeks ago, gaining four points in their last two games, and are hoping to book a spot in the semi-finals in their first season in the competition.
