Commendable move, Minister Tufton
Dear Editor,
Artificial trans-fats is a harmful compound that is created through a chemical process in which hydrogen is added to liquid vegetable oils. This technique, known as hydrogenation, solidifies liquid oils and increases the shelf life and flavour stability of the foods that contain them.
This process significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and even death. Unlike other dietary fats, trans-fats raise your low-density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) and lowers your high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol). Foods containing the highest levels of trans-fats include margarine, vegetable shortening, and oils, some varieties of baked goods, fast foods, coffee creamers, etc.
Jamaica’s recent decision to eliminate trans-fatty acids under a PAHO/WHO agreement by 2025 is indeed commendable. Countries such as Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Canada among others have already banned this ingredient. Incidentally, these countries enjoy high life expectancy rates and significant reduction of life-threatening disorders.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of deaths in Jamaica. This is attributed mainly to our over-reliance and consumption of these fats which is extremely detrimental to our health. The health and wellness ministry under the guidance of Minister Tufton is making great strides through its policies and initiatives to promote and preserve the health of Jamaicans.
Trans fats can be eliminated and replaced with healthier alternatives without altering taste and increasing cost. Might I add, it is the responsibility of all Jamaicans to be vigilant and responsible in ensuring that the foods consumed daily are wholesome, healthy and nutritious.
Let’s be proactive in our fight to lead ailment-free and fit lives.
