CATHERINE HALL, St James — Defending champions Cornwall College and former champions St George’s College will clash in the quarter-finals of the ISSA Champions Cup in the second game of a double- header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, set to start at 6:30pm.

The teams were drawn to meet each other in the all-island competition for the second straight year in Monday’s draw after winning their first-round games. The winner in Saturday’s game will book a semi-final place.

In the first game set to start at 4:00pm, a third former champion, Kingston College, and Frome Technical will meet for another semi-final spot.

Just three of the eight daCosta Cup teams survived the first round that was played last weekend. Number one seed and daCosta Cup champions Clarendon College are also still in contention for a place in the semi-final.

Last year, Cornwall College beat St George’s College 2-0 in the semi-finals in Kingston on their way to beating Jamaica College in the final at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Cornwall College will hope to make it back- to- back wins over St George’s College as they seek to become the first school to successfully defend the title.

Both teams had contrasting first round win – Cornwall College dominated Charlie Smith High, but only managed a 1-0 win with the goal coming in time added, while St George’s College battered BB Coke 6-2 in a game that was interrupted by rain last Saturday but was completed two days later.

Last Saturday, Cornwall College created a number of chances, but failed to put them away and had to wait for a dramatic free-kick from Brandon Curate five minutes into time added to finally get the better of Charlie Smith High at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Curate has scored Cornwall College’s last four goals after his hat-trick to beat Maggotty High in the daCosta Cup quarter-finals at Jarrett Park last week Tuesday, allowing the Montego Bay- based school into the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup competition.

Calvin Stephens, Raheim Heaven and even the overlapping defender Tavoy Noicely, all came close to breaking the deadlock against Charlie Smith. The Cornwall College coaching staff will hope they have better luck come Saturday.

St George’s led BB Coke 3-2 early in the second- half at the St Elizabeth Sports Complex when the game was called off, and in Monday’s resumption, the Manning Cup team completed an easy victory.

Frome Technical who fell at the first hurdle last year, got by Camperdown High 5-4 on penalties after they finished 1-1 in regulation time in the first game of the double-header played at STETHS, while Kington College beat Garvey Maceo High 2-0 at the National Stadium on Saturday.
