A stoppage time winner from Captain Rajiv Gavin helped former champions Kingston College (KC) to a 2-1 win over Frome Technical in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/WATA Champions Cup at Montego Bay Sports Complex last night.

The game appeared to be headed to a penalty shoot-out after Giovanni Mittoo had cancelled out an own goal from his teammate in the 62nd minute before the KC captain produced the heroics to send them through to the semi-finals.

A goalless first half saw KC carve out the better chances without being able to breach the Frome Technical goal.

Tyrese Williams was the first to get a look in when he won the ball off a Frome player just inside the opponents’ half and charged towards goal. However, he shot straight at the goalkeeper with the gaping goal to aim at in the 12th minute.

Both teams were guilty of giving away the ball in the middle of the park, as the game lacked fluency and real goalmouth action.

Williams was again guilty of spurning a good opportunity when his left-footed effort from eight yards went straight into the arms of Ivroy Smith.

Midfielder Christopher Pearson saw his curling grounder go just wide of the right upright just past the half hour mark which was the last effort created by KC in the half.

Frome Technical failed to register a shot on target for the entire first 45 minutes with the KC custodian David Martin having little to do but catch practice.

With nothing much happening after the restart, KC Coach Ludlow Bernard was the first to blink when he introduced Dwayne Atkinson and then Jamari Morrison with an hour played.

The move paid immediate dividends as Ryan Woodbine deflected a Morrison shot into his own goal in the 62nd minute. But Frome roared back into the contest four minutes later when Mittoo scored directly from a free kick near the corner flag.

Both teams went in search of the winner, but as the minutes ticked away it seemed sure to go to the dreaded penalty kicks. That was until the KC captain won the game late on for his team for the second time this season.

The Frome Technical defenders failed to deal properly with a corner kick and as the ball looped up, Gavin with his back to goal, hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the goal to win it for the team from North Street in Kingston in the 5th minute of added time.

Bernard was happy with the immediate impact made by his substitutes, but disappointed in the goal conceded.

“That’s what I wanted, an instant reaction. I thought my goalkeeper let me down on that free kick because we were doing pretty well defensively and we weren’t in danger of conceding a goal,” he said.

Renario Downswell was heartened by the performance of his team despite the result.

“I think they played well against Kingston College because Kingston College is a very technical team and they can pass the ball and use the ball very well. I think based on what I saw we will be up and running for next season,” he noted.
