MPs’ call for more pay gets public sympathy
A number of Jamaicans surveyed in the capital city yesterday have given conditional agreement to the call by some Members of Parliament (MPs) that they deserve more pay.
The Jamaica Observer sought the opinion of the public following this week’s Sunday Observer lead story in which several MPs lamented that their monthly salary of approximately $300,000 cannot suffice, as they have to use the money to support their families and help their constituents.

AJAH LINDSAY:“It depends onwhat they aredoing with themoney because$300,000 is notmoney. Themtrack record fidetermine thempay.”

RAYMOND FORREST: “If theywere to use the moneyin a better way, whichis to not encouragedependency andhandouts, thatmoney would easilycarry them through. If they encourageindependency theydon’t need to use themoney to do otherthings.”

ETHAN WILLIAMS: “Yes, theycan get a little more, but onlyif they spend it wisely.”

GEORGE MCDONALD: “Ifit is that they are takingmoney from the salaryto help others, then yes, they could get more pay, because $300,000 cyaan feedthe whole heap a hungry bellypickney dem.”

LACEY HENRY: “If they are reallyusing the money the waythey say they are, then theycould get an increase.”

RALSTON WILLIAMS: “Maybethey could get a little more, because, like they said, theyhave to give people moneyout of it.”
