Return of coach Fitzgerald brings hope as embattled Molynes brace for Lion challenge
The return of Coach Calvert Fitzgerald is aimed at inspiring Molynes United as the club attempts to stop the haemorrhaging that has seen it losing six of its last eight games.
The Kingston club will travel to Effortville Community Centre to play Humble Lion at 3:00 pm.
Veteran Fitzgerald has taken over from Coach Lijyasu Simms who last Thursday told the Jamaica Observer that he resigned from the club while citing interference from club management.
Fitzgerald, who will be having his second stint at Molynes United, brings a wealth of experience in top-flight football, having coached Waterhouse FC, Tivoli Gardens, Rivoli United, August Town, and Olympic Gardens.
However, he will have his hands full lifting newly promoted Molynes United who have picked up just two points from a possible 24 in their last eight games and are sitting in fourth spot on 20 points. They had won their first six games.
Humble Lion are just behind in fifth spot with 19 points and looking to inflict more misery on Molynes United, and in the process, leapfrog them in the table.
Many of the players would be familiar with Fitzgerald who would have played under his guidance in the KSAFA Super League last season, and a quick refamiliarisation should be on the cards.
Molynes will look to the Nelson brothers, Jermy and Nicholas, Devon Hodges, Ryan Brown, Fabiki Farquharson, Patrick Shecklude, Tyrique Wilson, Kemar Seivwright, and Sergino Frankson in the push for three points.
The Andrew Price-coached Humble Lion will be tough opponents and could make life difficult for Molynes United, having beaten them 2-1 on October 27, and the Clarndon-based outfit is fancied to repeat.
Humble Lion’s charge for victory should be led by Levaughn Williams, Andre Clennon, Courtney Hill, Rohan Richards, Kenneil Hyde, Hugh Howell, Renae Lloyd, and Linval Lewis.
Meanwhile, runaway leaders Waterhouse FC should continue on their merry way when they travel to the Edward Seaga Sports Complex to play an inconsistent Tivoli Gardens at 3:00 pm.
Waterhouse are on top with 33 points and hold an eight-point lead atop the standings.
As Waterhouse are rackling up the wins, Tivoli Gardens are struggling, having lost eight times from 14 games and occupy one of the two relegation spots. They are in 11th with 12 points and are desperately trying to really kick-start their season and move away from the relegation zone.
Champions Portmore United will be aiming to rebound from their humiliating 1-4 defeat to Waterhouse when they welcome Dunbeholden FC at the Spanish Town Prison Oval, starting at 3:00 pm.
Both eighth-placed Dunbeholden and ninth-placed Portmore are on 18 points each, and are just a point away from a top-six play-off spot in what is a closely-knitted mid-table. It will be another hard-fought match between Dunbeholden and Portmore as they battle for supremacy in St Catherine. Dunbeholden won their first encounter 1-0.
In a most crucial relegation dog-fight, bottom-placed Vere United, on 11 points, tackle 10th-placed the University of The West Indies (UWI) on 12 points at Wembley Centre of Excellence, starting at 3:00 pm. Only a point separates both teams and they will be fighting hard to secure three most valuable points in their quest to avoid relegation.
In the late kick-off at 7:00 pm, Harbour View welcome Cavalier to Compound. Harbour View are holding onto the last play-off spot, sitting in sixth on 19 points, while Cavalier are just behind in seventh on 18 points.
Harbour View won the first encounter 3-0 and will be hoping for a repeat, while revenge will be on Cavalier’s mind as they also hope to leapfrog them into a top-six spot.
On Monday, second-placed Mount Pleasant, on 25 points, tackle third-placed Arnett Gardens on 22 points in a mouth-watering encounter at 8 pm.
Mount Pleasant have won four of their last five games, while Arnett Gardens have won three of their last five. They are two of the hottest teams around, hence the stage is set for an epic battle in the Jungle.
