X-Amount builds solid foundation
AMERICAN dancehall singjay X-Amount said he’s spiritually connected to Jamaica, where his father was born, and its music.
In January, he launched the X-Amount Foundation aimed at assisting the less fortunate in Jamaica.
“The main objective of the foundation is to empower the youth and help them reach their highest potential through means of monetary support as well as school supplies, food and clothing. Our mission is to make a positive impact, while providing residents across Jamaica with the necessary resources and tools to accomplish their future goals. My one and only son was born in Kingston, so it is only appropriate that we first focus on the youth. Our motto is, ‘Every Youth is a Rising Star!’,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have begun gathering school supplies and food in preparation for disbursement. We will begin our early focus throughout the community of Jungle [Arnett Gardens] in Kingston. We also hope to partner with many more communities throughout Jamaica in the not too distant future,” X-Amount continued.
Born Gus Knight III, the singjay began pursuing music professionally eight years ago. He said he was heavily influenced by music from Jamaica.
“My Jamaican heritage consists on my dad’s side of the family. I did not come to know him until my late teens — so a part of my culture and roots were disconnected until I slowly began to spend time with him and my grandmother. He introduced me to the music of Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown. My father shared that from the time I was born, all he played was reggae music to calm my spirit,” X-Amount explained.
He has performed locally, sharing stages with the likes of King Yellowman, and has opened shows for the likes of Baby Cham, Macka Diamond, Elephant Man and former dancehall artiste Lady Saw.
His latest single is Oh Jah Jah (remix) features gospel artiste DJ Nicholas.
“The inspiration for the song came from a place similar to King David in the book of Psalms. One who called upon the Most High in times of need and protection. The world pandemic has definitely brought about a message needed as such,” he said.
X-Amount is the executive producer of Oh Jah Jah while SFR Beats created the instrumental.
“I personally reached out to DJ Nicholas and presented the concept and feature. I explained to him that in times like these, we can never have too much inspiration. He is a great lyricist and a humble musician. Without any hesitation, he agreed to do the project,” said X-Amount.
Oh Jah Jah is expected to be on Wat Goes Around, Comes Around, the 14-track debut album by X-Amount. It is scheduled for release in the summer. Among its producers are Delroy “Fatta” Pottinger and Nigerian Sam Ultra Vibes.
