Uber launches in Jamaica
Ride-sharing company Uber has launched its app in Kingston Jamaica.
The much-anticipated launch happened on Tuesday (June 15), two months after the American technology company signalled its interest in the Jamaican market.
“We are happy to announce our arrival in Kingston to play a role in Jamaica’s post-COVID-19 economic reactivation,†the company said. “Our mission in Jamaica and other cities where the app is available is to create opportunities through accessible mobility, acting as an ally to the city. We look forward to serving Jamaicans and visitors to the island.â€
Adding that all leases are covered by Guardian Insurance.
“We are proud and honoured to support the Uber app availability in Kingston. As a leading insurance provider, the Uber app sought our best-in-class products and services to ensure the highest safety level for users and lessor partners,†said the insurance company.
The company also noted that Uber is committed to being an ally of Kingston.
“We want people to enjoy all of the benefits that our technology provides. Uber is for everyone, and we encourage people to download the app to start moving around the city conveniently. People interested in earning extra money on their schedule will also find countless opportunities in the app as a lessor partner to help mitigate current challenging circumstances,†it said.
The Uber app will be available in Jamaica through a “vehicle-with-driver†lease agreement.
Users who who have utilized the app so far, took to Twitter to share their experiences, and are mainly impressed with the low cost of ride.

Uber fees and commissions are typically made up of booking fees as well as per minute and mile fees paid by passengers. Drivers usually end up with the majority of the fares since Uber charges a service fee of 25 per cent.
