A mother’s pain
MONTEGO BAY, St James – The beautiful start to her Mother’s Day celebration on Sunday could not have prepared Sandra McIntosh-Bryan for the day’s tragic ending.
The mother of six had woken up on Sunday morning full of zeal and ready to take on the day’s activities as her family honoured the love and kindness she continuously pours into her children.
Her first and only “token”— a drawing of the family and a rose —she told the Jamaica Observer West, came from her 11-year-old son Jason Bryan whom she affectionately called ‘MJ’. This is a gift the mother will never forget as young Jason, a grade five student at St James’ Barracks Road Primary School, was later mowed down by a speeding motorcar on Sunday evening in his Meadowsvale community.
This was the Mother’s Day from hell for McIntosh-Bryan who had earlier sent her son on an errand at a nearby community shop.
“On Sunday evening we came home from church, and he went over to my friend Devon’s house. Normally it is over their house MJ deh because he [Devon] is like a child and he plays with them every time they get the chance to visit,” the grieving mother explained.
“So, mi call MJ when mi see the time a dark up because by 6:30 pm mi always call them in and lock my gate. When he finally came to me, I sent him to buy two pampers for his little brother. I gave him the shopping bag and all now I don’t see the shopping bag or his slippers,” a teary-eyed McIntosh-Bryan told the Observer West.
The mother stated that while waiting on the return of her son, she was alerted to the tragic incident by residents who reportedly saw two motorcars racing down the Retirement main road.
“Mi just hear when people call out, ‘Sandra, Sandra, Sandra, your son dead!’ and mi run off same time and collapse…mi feel a pain cut me across my belly,” said McIntosh-Bryan, as she wiped tears from her eyes.
Young Jason was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital (CRH) by the driver who had allegedly hit him, the mother said. Frightened by the tragic turn of Mother’s Day, McIntosh-Bryan stated that she enlisted the help of a community pastor who took both she and her husband Jason Bryan Sr, affectionately called Marlon, to the hospital some 20 minutes away.
The child is said to have been in a very bad condition and had fallen into a coma.
“When mi go up a hospital and see MJ mi couldn’t believe…even tears drop out of my eyes,” said the distraught mother .
However, the family was still hopeful that Jason, a jovial and promising young boy, would have survived this ordeal. They ultimately went home and was looking forward to visiting him the following day. But, with tears streaming down her face, McIntosh-Bryan recounted a frightening dream she had in the wee hours of Monday morning that soon became a sad reality.
“Mi dream see MJ yesterday morning before day and I turned to my husband and said, MJ dead you know? Mi tell him that mi dream see the nurse a wrap up MJ in a white sheet and same time mi tell him fi come on mek we go by the hospital. We went and he was not in a good state,” she said.
The grieving mother added, “When mi touch MJ foot it was cold like ice. I had to say, no God mi cya manage this…this is too much. We started to pray for MJ, and I turned to him and said, ‘MJ come back to us…please come back. I miss you and your brother Daniel really misses you’.”
“I saw when tears started to come from his eyes, and he gasped for air. We were asked to step outside, and the doctor called Marlon and said that MJ is gone. The lick wah MJ get him head swell and the doctors said that he had internal bleeding,” she continued.
Young Jason’s dream of attending the Rusea’s High School in Hanover will never come to fruition, the mother lamented.
“Jason was a good boy…look how many years MJ a go Barracks Road Primary School and he didn’t give any trouble. A teacher has never had to send a letter to me complaining about him. He told me that he wanted to attend the Rusea’s High School because that is where his uncle went. I told him to work for his goals and he didn’t even get the chance to do that,” she wailed.
“Mi nuh know how mi a go get over this…mi cya go get over this,” McIntosh-Bryan said. With hands plastered to her cheeks, the greiving mother stared on the section of the Retirement main road where Jason is said to have been hit by the motorcar.
“Oh God, I will always miss him,” she stressed.
As for the man accused of mowing down young Jason, McIntosh-Bryan said that the family is waiting on word from the Granville Police Station.
“I went to report it and Marlon gave the police officers the driver’s contact number. They told him to visit the police station. He was there when we were at the hospital on Sunday evening, and he came back yesterday…but I don’t know what is going on with that,” she said.
“An eyewitness said that MJ was not even trying to run across the road…he was standing up on the banking of the main road. The drivers were racing on the road and kill mi pickney,” the mother alleged.
Up to press time, calls made to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) by the Observer West have indicated that the accused man has not been charged for the child’s death.
