Two more teachers die; classes suspended at one school
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Vice Principal of the Excelsior Primary and Infant school, Shirley Pinnock, is one of two teachers who died over the weekend.
As a result of her death, the school has since sent out a memo advising students not to turn up for school on Monday as the teachers mourn, OBSERVER ONLINE sources have confirmed. The other teacher is Delores McFarlane, who taught at the Discovery Ball All-Age and Infant School. She reportedly died on Saturday.
The cause of death of Pinnock, who died early Sunday, could not be ascertained up to press time, but it is understood that she had been ill for some time.
It was also learnt that McFarlane had been battling brain cancer.
Condolences have been posted on social media for the family of the veteran teachers.
Over recent weeks, several teachers have passed away locally. In fact, seven teachers died in the week running from May 11 to May 18.
Efforts to speak with the president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Winston Smith, have so far proven futile.
