Shaw to represent Jamaica at UN road safety meeting
Minister of Transport and Mining, Audley Shaw is expected to represent Jamaica at the United Nations Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) High-Level Meeting on June 30 and July 1.
UNRSF was created to provide funding to developing countries to support road safety projects and improve road safety architecture.
The meeting will be held at the UN’s headquarters in New York under the theme “The 2030 horizon for road safety: securing a decade of action and delivery”.
In a release on Tuesday, it was shared that the meeting will serve as an opportunity to improve Jamaica’s presence on the global stage and identify collaborative opportunities with the UNRSF and other agencies.
The transport minister is slated to deliver Jamaica’s Plenary Statement in support of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
Additionally, Jamaica is to co-host the Pledging Event, serving as an advocate for the replenishment of the UNSRF and give the keynote address at panel one of the multi-stakeholder panels and will focus on “mainstreaming road safety into sustainable development: political will and whole of government approach”.
Shaw said he is looking forward to the event as Jamaica battles with the plague of road crashes and fatalities.
A total of 234 fatalities have been recorded on the island since the start of 2022.
