#WorldChamps: Jamaica begins hunt for world record in women’s 4x100m relays
EUGENE, Oregon – Jamaica’s sprint quartet has begun their quest for gold and the world record in the women’s 4×100 metres relay at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
The quartet of Briana Williams, Natalliah Whyte, Ramona Burchell and Kemba Nelson lined up in heat 1 and carried the baton across the line in a season’s best time of 42.37 seconds to claim the runner-up spot in the event. The race was won by Great Britain, who ran a world leading time of 41.99 seconds.
Jamaica is the defending champion after storming to gold at the 2019 Doha World Championships and holds the championship record of 41.07 seconds, which was set at the 2015 Beijing World Championships.
Meanwhile, based on World Athletics rules, Jamaica is able to make three changes for the final, which could include the golden ladies of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah.
The final of the women’s 4×100 metres relay is scheduled for tomorrow, July 23 at 9:30pm Jamaica time.
