Real Boss looks set to take charge in 1959 Trophy feature
With the racing conditions and distance just perfect, the Spencer Chung-conditioned Real Boss looks well poised for her maiden win in the $980,000 Caymanas Park 1959 Trophy feature event on the nine-race card at Caymanas Park today.
The three-year-old American-bred chestnut filly showed real signs of ability at the races on last when finishing second to Perfect Brew over seven furlongs (1,400m) on August 6. Real Boss, running in the blinkers for the first time, walked out of the starting gates and came storming towards the end to finish a length behind the winner in a time of 1:27.3 minutes.
The Lakeland Farms-owned Real Boss (Tonalist–Hisse) should relish this extension trip and could get up in time for the win. This foreigner is steadily improving and has looked good at exercise in the mornings. Back-to-back Jamaica Oaks winning jockey Reyan Lewis replaces Dick Cardenas in the saddle.
Unruly Dude, trained by Dennis Pryce, and D Head Cornerstone, trained by back-to-back Jamaica Derby winning conditioner Gary Subratie, are also in the running when the verdict is read.
The Caymanas Park 1959 feature, a native-bred three-year-old (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-old and upwards maidens over one mile (1,600m), is positioned as the eighth race on progarmme with a post time of 4:55 pm. First race is at 12:30 pm.
Unruly Dude ran a good third behind Perfect Brew and Real Boss over seven furlongs on August 6. With the trip extended and Real Boss present, Unruly Dude may fall short of the target again, but that effort came after a break, and with that run in tow, he is going to have a strong say in the outcome. Note, Unruly Dude races with the visor on. Current leading rider and Derby winning jockey Dane Dawkins replaces apprentice Youville Pinnock in the irons.
D Head Cornerstone finished a tame fourth in the recent Jamaica Derby, some 30 ¼ lengths behind Atomica over 12 furlongs (2,400m). Based on that run, D Head Cornerstone, again racing in his grade, will be comfortable, and the distance of a mile is in his favour. Champion jockey Anthony Thomas has retained the ride on D Head Cornerstone, which speaks volumes of his chances here.
Of the rest of the runners in the 10-horse field, maybe Thirtyonekisses, Monsieur Blue, and El Cid could put in noticeable efforts here.
Trained by Hall-of-Famer Richard Azan, Thirtyonekisses made the frame on last, finishing fourth behind Pretty Girl over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m). Thirtyonekisses, who is better suited to the distance of a mile, should not be disgraced with his main offering being a place on the board.
Monsieur Blue finished last in the Jamaica Derby on August 6, left in the haze by 99 lengths. the Gresford Smith trainee should improve on that effort now that he is back in his grade and should earn for his connections.
The Anthony Nunes-trained El Cid finished fourth on his first attempt at the non-winners of two level behind Perfect Brew, Real Boss, and Unruly Dude, on August 6. El Cid should enjoy this distance and is fit and ready to put in another good run. El Cid is a threat and should be watched closely as the champion trainer continues his winning dominance on the three-year-old maiden races.
