Projexx’s got it made

Singer Projexx is happy to be part of Made in Lagos, Nigerian Afrobeats artiste Wizkid’s gold-certified album.

The album’s certification by the Recording Industry Association of America marking sales of more than 500,000 units was issued on August 25.

Projexx is featured on the song True Love with Tay Iwar. Damian “Jr Gong” Marley is on the track Blessed.

“I was in Miami and Juls [British-Ghanaian producer Julian Nicco-Annan] sent a beat to me, and I found an idea immediately for it. After I sent it to him, I didn’t hear back from him until probably a month later and he hit me up and said that the song was going to be on Wizkid’s album. That’s how True Love was born,” Projexx disclosed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.

He continued, “We didn’t work together physically, but Wizkid and I spoke a couple of times before the album’s release, to just organise the song. The energy was high, and he really has a good ear for music. He knows what he is looking for, so I would say that it was a great experience.”

Made in Lagos was released via Starboy Entertainment/RCA Records on October 30, 2020. A deluxe edition featuring the remix of its hit single, Essence with Tems and Justin Bieber, came out in August 2021.

The album debuted and peaked at number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and rose to number 28 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. It also topped the US World Albums Chart, and charted in Ireland, France, Canada, Switzerland and Belgium.

Made in Lagos was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in January, for sales exceeding 60,000 units.

It was nominated for Best Global Music Album at the 64th Grammy Awards. Last year, Made in Lagos won Album of The Year at the African Entertainment Awards USA.

Said Projexx, “When I was recording my verse for the song, I had no idea that it was going to be part of an album of this calibre. It was just me working and just trying to put myself out there. It’s a crazy feeling, another surreal moment being part of a certified gold or platinum single or album. It’s every artiste’s dream, and I’m just happy I was able to accomplish this so soon. I’m even more excited to see what the future has in store for me.”

Projexx, whose real name is Johni James, is the son of producer Lloyd “John John” James and grandson of engineer/producer Lloyd “King Jammys” James. He attended Jamaica College and made his debut in 2017 with the song Sighting.

Currently signed to Warner Music, he released the EP Queen Hill last year.
