Shericka Jackson beat Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in a 100m race for the first time, ending the five-time world champion’s season-long winning streak.

Jackson nipped her compatriot on the line to win the event at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme Diamond League meet in Brussels on Friday.

It was the eighth time the women were lining up against each other since 2018, and the World Championships 200m champion, who was the only Jamaican winner on the day, ran 10.73 seconds (0.6m/s).

Jackson caught the fast-starting Fraser-Pryce at the tape to win by 1/100th of a second. Fraser-Pryce clocked 10.74, while Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Côte d’Ivoire was third in 10.78.

Fraser-Pryce got off to her usual fast start and appeared to have her 10th consecutive win sewn up before Jackson caught her at the line.

Jackson said it took all she had to get the victory.

“It takes a lot of hard work to beat Shelly-Ann, she’s a tough cookie to beat. So you need to keep working hard if you want to win. Tonight I had a good execution of my race, so I’m happy with that,” she said.

For her part, Fraser-Pryce who had to pull out of a race a week ago after suffering a slight injury during warm-ups, did not blame that for her second-place finish.

“I feel okay about today’s race; it wasn’t anything spectacular but I felt good. I do not have any injury so that is the most important part,” she said.

The 35-year-old was not ready to committing to run in Zurich, the final Diamond League meeting of the year before the finals.

“I am not sure about Zurich. I will have to wait and listen to my body.”

World Championships silver medallist Britany Anderson was fourth in the 100m hurdles, running 12.44 seconds (0.1 m/s). She was just ahead of Megan Tapper, who ran a lifetime best 12.51. Her previous best of 12.52 came in the semi-finals of the World Championships in Oregon in July.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico won with a meet record and season best 12.27, her fifth win on the Diamond League circuit this season. The ever-improving American Tia Jones (12.38) ran her sixth personal best of the season.

World Championships relay medallist Candice McLeod was fifth in the women’s 400m in 50.76 seconds in a race that saw two national records being broken and one other personal best set.

World Championships finalist Fiordaliza Cofil of the Dominican Republic dipped under the 50-second mark for the first time, winning with 49.80, ahead of Barbadian Sada Williams (50.15). Cynthia Bolingo was third in a new Belgian record 50.19, while Mary Moraa set a Kenyan record 50.67 for fourth.

Stephenie Ann McPherson placed eighth in 51.73.

Intermediate hurdler Rushell Clayton ran a personal best 52.02 for third in the women’s 400m B race which was won by France’s Amandine Brossier in 51.74.

“I’m running in the outer lanes almost all season, so during the race I didn’t know where I was placed,” Clayton said. “But you know, it’s the same 400m for everyone and I just tried to run the best race as possible. My next race I’m running the hurdles again.”
