Mitchell basks in match-winning debut goal for Arnett Gardens
Revaldo Mitchell was sent unto the field with eleven minutes to play and with the game hanging in the balance at 1-1.
That was how the former Wolmer’s Boys’ Manning Cup star made his debut for new club Arnett Gardens in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) in front of one of the most hostile group of home fans in the competition.
Arnett Gardens were playing against their nemesis club Cavalier FC, who had beaten them in the opening fixture last term and after coming from behind to draw level, they were determined to find the winner this time around.
Luckily for Mitchell, it would prove to be a dream debut that would also help to endear him to home supporters who were seeing him in competitive action for the very first time as he grabbed the winner in the sixth and final minute of added time at the end of the game.
Mitchell was quickest to react to a rebound inside the box, sliding the ball past Jeadine White who had made the initial save but was left prone and distraught on the ground after the ball was fired back past him and into the net.
In comparison it was a great moment of delight for Mitchell who celebrated with his new teammates and the fans.
The new kid on the block revealed that the message from his coach Paul “Tegat” Davis as he entered the field was a very simple one.
“Go out there and do what you know you can do, so I went out there and tried to do my best and that’s what go me the goal,” he said.
“Those finishes are like from I was young, so I just keep doing them in the box,” Mitchell said of his winning goal and his first in the famous red and black jersey.
He was grateful for the reception that he received from the fans on entering the pitch and was happy that he was able to repay them with the winning goal.
“It’s a wonderful feeling and the Complex showed me love when I came on and I am just happy that I made them happy at the end of the game. It’s a wonderful feeling. I am really delighted to get that goal in the last minute.”
Having transferred from Portmore United at the end of the season, Mitchell has come to Arnett Gardens in hunt of silverware.
“I just came here to help the team. It’s a wonderful team and we are aiming for the trophy, so I will try to do whatever I can to help them going forward.”
Mitchell is hoping for a double-digit goal scoring season and is quite happy to have hit the ground running in his first outing.
“I started off well because what I wanted was five goals in five games, but the long-term goal is to get 10 goals for the season.”
Based on what was said by his coach at the end of the game, a lot more is expected of him this season.
“I am happy with the goal he scored. I think I need more from him. He has a lot in him to come out, but he gave us the win and I am happy for that,” Davis said.
Mitchell and Davis will be hunting three more points when they host former champions Portmore United on Sunday starting at 7:30pm.
